Misinformation isn’t exactly a new concept. People have inadvertently been sharing inaccurate or incorrect information with each other for thousands of years. The current world we, however, live in has enabled information to reach large audiences across the globe because of the which the widespread effects of misinformation pose a greater threat to the information ecosystem.
Researchers, journalists, students among others can use the following tips to ensure authenticity of any news story.
Tip 1
Check the source. If the information has appeared on a website, then check the origins of the website. Be mindful of fake news sites and satire pieces.
Tip 2
Can if the information be corroborated? Authentic sources will mention where they got the information from.
Tip 3
Always investigate the author. Find out where the material originated from, and if the original source is credible.
Tip 4
Check the date. Misinformation is often spread by using old news, out of context (which is also known as mal-information).
Tip 5
Do you think if the information benefits any particular group, whether it actually benefits the public, or a political or economic power?
Tip 6
Don’t depend only on the headline. Headlines are often ‘clickbaits’ and include content that is sensational.
